May. 14th, 2008 05:49 pm OT: Rant.

To book reviewers the world over:

Please, for the love of Eru Iluvatar, Aslan, and assorted other deities, stop calling people "the next J.K. Rowling."  Stephenie Meyer is not J.K. Rowling.  Neither is Christopher Paolini.  Do you know why?  Because they are Stephenie Meyer and Christopher Paolini.  They are different people than J.K. Rowling.  While they all write YA fantasy, and the quality of their writing is the topic of heated debate, they have very little else in common.

I feel sorry for anyone who picks up "Twilight" and expects it to be about a bespectacled young wizard.

May. 13th, 2008 04:46 pm OT: Three Reasons Why Giving Blood is Not Icky

1.  You get to miss class.  Or work.  And people don't mind.
2. You are forced to sit down and eat junk food for fifteen minutes.
3. You're saving a life.  'Nuff said.

This has been a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood Tomato.

May. 6th, 2008 08:13 am I has Photoshop!

I have Photoshop!  Yayness!  This does not change the fact that my art leaves much to be desired, but at least now it can be colored nicely.

The red-skinned boy in the picture is Agent Rouge, whom some may recognize from the RP on the PPC Posting Board.  Why is he red, you ask?  Rouge comes from the Naruto continuum, where a careless author wrote a story about "The Rogue Ninja" but kept switching around the G and the U.  Hence Rouge's color.

The boy in what is supposed to be a Polaroid picture (does it look like one?) is Rouge's partner Hamelt, who was killed in the Sue Invasion.  Both Rouge and Hamelt worked in the Department of Technical Errors, and Rouge was transferred to Bad Slash after Hamelt died.

Rouge has bandages on his shoulder in the big picture because he was shot by a Sue.  And for some reason the picture is showing up really tiny...is it supposed to do that?  How do I make it bigger?

I finished Script Frenzy!  I didn't fail horribly!  I actually wrote one hundred pages!  Much yayness!

*ahem* Okay, I'm calm now.  I'm just very excited.  I did so badly at NaNoWriMo last November that I didn't expect to actually finish Screnzy.  But I DID, and it feels very good.

Apr. 24th, 2008 07:05 pm OT: I have succumbed to the Dark Side!

I have a Facebook.  I finally broke down and got myself a Glaurunging Facebook.  I blame this year's senior class prank.  I was the only senior who didn't know to put an alarm clock in my locker because I do not have a Facebook nor do I text message.  Plus my future freshman class has started a group and I don't want to be the only person at orientation who doesn't know anyone.

So, I have a Facebook.  Any of my friends here are welcome to friend me there.  I am here.

Apr. 22nd, 2008 04:06 pm Mission #5-B: Worthless

Being a continuation of the macrovirus/invasion tie-in begun in "A Very Wicky Problem."  This mission turned out to be very long and thus is divided into three parts instead of my usual two.

A thank you to

[info]greencat3 for beta-ing!

Disclaimer: The PPC is the creation of Jay and Acacia.  Doctor Who and Torchwood are the property of the BBC.  “Worthless” is the creation of horns-halos4ever, and she is more than welcome to keep it.  I sure don’t want it.

Living Typo Disclaimer: The Mini-Major-General Sir Rodric Murgatroyd is from Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddigore continuum and was adopted from Tawaki.  The Mini-Brick Enjorlas is from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables continuum and his adoption was approved by Miss Irene of UDÉM.  Benjamain Barker is from Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd continuum and was adopted from BattleHamster.  Beethoven “Moonlight” Sonata was found in “Blood in the Stars,” a Firefly fanfic by phoenix catcher.

Warning: This mission contains spoilers for the first part of Tawaki’s macrovirus crisis (Episode #16 of Tawaki’s mission log), specifically in the form of a certain character death.  Anyone strongly invested in PPC canon will wish to read Tawaki’s mission first.  It can be found here: http://community.livejournal.com/tawaki_ppc/5882.html

In addition, it contains references and minor spoilers to the RP session of April 17-21, 2008, on the PPC Posting Board.  These are minor and participation in the RP is not necessary to understand this fic.  The threads can be found here: http://disc.yourwebapps.com/discussion.cgi?disc=199610;article=166244;title=PPC%20Posting%20Board

Apr. 7th, 2008 06:06 pm OT: King Lear, and a Poem

I have entirely forgiven my English class for the Frankenstein debacle of earlier this year, because they are the first class I've had all through high school who actually takes Shakespeare seriously!  When they read, they emote.  They pronounce things right.  They keep the rude jokes to a minimum.  I have been having a lovely time.

To make things even better, we're doing King Lear!  Which is tied with The Merchant of Venice for my absolute favorite Shakespeare play of all time.  And I get to read for Kent!  I'm very happy about that, because he is my favorite character and I have pretty much no chance of ever playing him on stage, as he is a forty-eight-year-old man and I am a teenage girl.  And I very much look like a girl.  But I get to read for him!  *squees*

Things have been interesting as we've read the first three acts.  Lear has been read by my academic archnemesis, whom I will call Clyde.  Clyde is the one exception to the keeping rude jokes to a minimum thing that I was talking about, in that every time the word 'ho' comes up, he snickers.  Which is really getting old.  And he did a strip tease when Lear tears his clothes off in the storm.  And having to call Clyde "master" bordered on humiliating.  But he does make a good Lear.

Because I have Lear on the brain, and in honor of National Poetry Month, I wrote a sonnet from Kent's perspective.  Please don't laugh.

Mar. 31st, 2008 05:38 pm OT: Screnzy!

Obviously, I didn't learn my lesson from NaNoWriMo, because now I'm doing Script Frenzy.  Gah.  I'm going to go even more insane than I already am.  100 pages of a script in thirty days.  As if I didn't have enough to do.

I'm really excited about my project for Screnzy.  It's a graphic novel script, sort of a combination between steampunk and the Hardy Boys, with a bit of randomness thrown in for good measure.  It has absolutely nothing to do with my NaNoWriMo novel, because there's no way I could stay focused on one thing for that long.

Hey, can anyone on my friends list draw?  My character designs at the moment consist of Gaia avatars, and I like to have a better idea of what my characters look like before I write.  (My own drawing skills leave much to be desired.)  If anyone would consider helping me out, I am willing to pay them in fanfic drabbles!

Mar. 24th, 2008 06:43 pm OT: Match It for Pratchett!

So, I'm not really the sort to plug charities, but this is PTerry we're talking about.

As some of you know, Terry Pratchett, author of the uber-wonderful Discworld books, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's.  This is sad, but he's not one for moping.  He recently donated five hundred thousand pounds (that is a LOT of money) to Alzheimer's research.  Now his fans and fellow authors are following his lead.  The goal is to match PTerry's phenomenal donation, any way we can.

The initiative's main website can be found here.  It gives several ways you can donate.  If you donate directly, be sure to mention in the comments that it's for Terry Pratchett.

Also worth checking out is George R. R. Martin's (the author of A Song of Ice and Fire) blog entry here

Even if you can't donate, spread the word!  And may Glod be with you!

Mar. 19th, 2008 09:43 am OT: R.I.P. Arthur C. Clarke

Arthur C. Clarke, one of the greatest science-fiction writers of this last century, died last night of heart failure in Sri Lanka.  He was ninety years old.  He will be sorely missed.

It seems like all I post on here is memes and obituaries.  There's been an unusual amount of science-fiction and fantasy-related deaths recently, hasn't there?  It's not fair.  It's really, really not fair.  *sniff*

Mar. 5th, 2008 04:27 pm RIP: Gary Gygax

Just spreading the word...it's such a shame.  He was an inspiration to several generations of geeks.  (Text of the obituary is from the Wired blog.)

Gary Gygax, one of the co-creators of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, according to Stephen Chenault, CEO of Troll Lord Games.

Gygax designed the original D&D game with Dave Arneson in 1974, and went on to create the Dangerous Journeys and Lejendary Adventure RPGs, as well as a number of board games. He also wrote several fantasy novels.

...Gygax went well beyond the role of game developer and became an icon to gamers, appearing as himself in episodes of Futurama and Code Monkeys and participating in discussions on roleplaying-related message boards.

Gygax had been in poor health for some time, according to his wife Gail. Chenault says he will publish more information, including funeral arrangements, on the Troll Lord message board as it becomes available.

Feb. 28th, 2008 09:35 am OT: I feel like such a traitor.

I saw the Lord of the Rings musical...and I liked it.  I mean, really liked it.  As in, it was all I could talk about for a good forty-eight hours afterwards, and I have listened to the soundtrack virtually nonstop since last Saturday.  And I dare to call myself an upholder of canon.

Wow, this was long.  I'd better stop now.
